Extractions, and the plan that comes with them
An extraction is the last resort, for a tooth that cannot be saved. What matters as much as the removal is what goes into the space afterward, because the bone that held the tooth has nothing left to do and the teeth beside the gap begin to move into it.
So the extraction visit is planned alongside the replacement: an implant, a bridge carried by the teeth either side, or a denture across a longer run. Which one suits is read from the scan and from the teeth around the gap.
When the whole arch is the question
A fixed arch is carried on four to six implants per arch. The number and the positions come off a cone beam CT scan, which shows a 3D image of your jaw’s anatomy, and that scan happens before any surgery is scheduled.
Between placement and the finished teeth there are months while the bone grows around the fixtures.
Looking after the result
An implant is not maintenance-free. The gum around a fixture and the teeth beside it still need brushing, flossing and regular exams, the same as a natural tooth does. A crown is cared for exactly the way the tooth under it would have been. Most of the work that shortens the life of a restoration is work that a routine check would have caught early.
